What is Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) that are released into the atmosphere directly or indirectly by the activities of a person, company, city, or state. These emissions are measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e).
Two ways Carbon Footprint for businesses are recorded in Thailand.
Carbon Footprint of Organization(CFO) - An organization’s carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted from various activities of an organization and is measured in the form of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e).
It is divided into the following three main scopes:
Scope I: Calculation of DIRECT emissions from activities of the organization such as combustion of machinery, use of organization’s vehicles(owned by organization), use of chemicals in wastewater treatment, etc.
Scope II: Calculation of INDIRECT emissions from purchased energy used in an organization, such as electrical energy, thermal energy, steam energy, etc.
Scope III: Calculation of ALL OTHER INDIRECT emissions such as employee travel in personal vehicles, use of raw materials, use of rented equipment, etc.
Carbon Footprint of Product(CFP) - A product carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gasses emissions produced throughout a product’s life cycle. It is calculated from the raw materials used to disposal of the product and is measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e).
